How Much Is a Skateboard in Singapore?

Complete or Custom Complete: Which Is Better for Me?

If you are on a tight budget, or just want to dip your toes into skateboarding and see whether you like it, I would recommend getting a pre-built skateboard complete for around $120 to $150.

The parts used for these skateboards are more basic, so they may not pop as well or roll as smoothly as a custom-built skateboard. However, they still do their job and are more than enough for someone who is just starting out. You can also upgrade each part individually in the future, so there is no pressure to choose a custom-built complete from the start.

If you have a slightly higher budget of around $200 or more, or plan to do a lot of tricks, I would strongly recommend getting a custom-built complete through Halfpiped’s 3D Board Customiser.

Compared to a pre-built complete, the skateboard will generally feel lighter, pop better and roll much more smoothly because of the better bearings and wheels. The difference in quality is quite significant, and the parts will generally hold up better against the wear and tear caused by doing tricks.

Make Sure the Board Suits the Rider

Whether you are getting a pre-built or custom complete, choosing the correct skateboard size and wheels is still important. Based on my experience skating for almost a decade, I would recommend the following skateboard specifications as a general starting point.

Sizing: For US men’s shoe size 6 and below, choose a skateboard that is 7.75 inches or smaller. For US men’s shoe sizes 6 to 9, choose between 7.75 and 8.0 inches. For US men’s shoe sizes 9 to 11, choose between 8.125 and 8.25 inches. For US men’s shoe size 12 and above, choose between 8.375 and 8.5 inches.

These are general recommendations rather than strict rules, feel free to size up or down by 0.125 to 0.25 inches. Size up for slightly more room and stability, or size down for slightly more control and responsiveness.

Wheels: Skateboard wheels come in different sizes and hardness levels. Wheels that are 52mm or smaller are great for tricks. Wheels between 53mm and 55mm offer a good balance between tricks and cruising, while wheels that are 56mm or larger are generally better for cruising.

I recommend installing a riser pad when using wheels that are 54mm or larger to help reduce wheelbite.

For wheel hardness, I would recommend 90A and below for rough floors. Wheels between 91A and 98A are suitable for a mix of rough and smooth floors, while wheels that are 99A or harder are better suited for smooth floors and skateparks.
